GERRARDS CROSS HOCKEY CLUB NOTE TO MEMBERS
I trust you have all enjoyed the hot summer and are looking forward to the new season. The purpose of this note is to update you with recent developments, the revised plans for training as well as to advise of upcoming courses of which I hope all members will take advantage.
I am pleased to be able to confirm that the builders have moved in and that the pitch at BHS is being replaced. An estimated time of completion of the start of September has been given, in time for the start of the new school term. We will be making contingency plans in case of delay, in particular for the juniors, whom we hope to begin on the first Friday of September. A separate note in relation to the juniors will be circulated shortly and we will keep you updated as to the timings on the pitch. The important point, however, is that we hope to be able to begin the season with an excellent new pitch, which can only assist the quality of play and also encourage new members to the Club.
In relation to the juniors, we were sad to say goodbye to Joe Sterlini at the end of last season and wish him all the best for the future. New plans have been put in place for the juniors this year, including limiting that to two sessions, with the U16 boys and girls being encouraged to take part in the Thursday evening training run by John Shaw.
For the adults (and U16s) we are delighted that John has been able to rearrange his plans so as to continue coaching on a Thursday evening and will be looking at plans to ensure that we get the best out of this session, particularly as numbers should be increased by the inclusion of the U16s. Details of dates when the Thursday evenings will begin will be put on the website once agreed but hopefully by mid-September.
3. Umpiring Courses
We have been advised of some upcoming Level 1 umpiring courses at Amersham and WycombeCollege on Sunday 2 September 2018 and Marlow Sports Club on Sunday 16 September 2018, both 9am till 4.30pm. The closing date is until 22 August 2018 and 5 September 2018 respectively and we would like to encourage all members to try and attend either of these sessions, as it is vital for theClub’s future that we have more qualified umpires. In that respect, the Club is willing to pay for the cost for the first five volunteers to sign up and we would remind younger members that there will be plenty of opportunities during the season to act as umpires, for which payment is made. More details will be put on the website.
4. New Members and Volunteers
With the benefit of the new pitch, we will be working hard to see if we can attract some new members, particularly at the adult level, to ensure that we can maintain at least two teams for ladies and men. Once we know when the pitch will be complete, we will be looking at plans for an event to celebrate, at which anyone interested in joining the club, will be given the opportunity to participate.
